Prized by collectors and novice gardeners alike, orchids produce some of the
most beautiful and distinctive blooms on earth. But did you know that orchids
aren't typically found in the ground? The flowers that most people think of
when they hear "orchid" usually emerge from crevices in tropical trees, and
are cultivated very carefully for indoor enjoyment in colder climates. Those
varieties have earned orchids a reputation for being prima donnas that are
difficult and frustrating to grow. But these orchids are different…
Easy-Care Orchids Do Exist!
If you've never grown a Chinese Ground Orchid, also called Bletilla, you're in for a
treat. Each shoot can produce up to 14 exotic blooms with heavily ruffled lips. Not
only are these delicate beauties easier to grow than any other orchid variety, but
because they grow in the ground, they're able to withstand much colder temperatures
than their tree-dwelling cousins. In fact, the three varieties in this brand new
collection will thrive even in zones 4-5 with only a little winter mulch as protection.
Ground Orchid foliage makes an attractive display when the pretty pastel flowers
aren't in bloom, and your collection will increase in size and beauty over time.
Don't let their delicate
looks fool you!
These exquisite flowers may look
fussy, but they'll thrive in borders,
containers and rock gardens with
minimal care. Simply plant them
in a well-drained area and protect
them from extreme cold.

Light: Part to Full Shade
