Dahlias

Dahlias

Breck's dahlias provide beautiful colour in your garden from summer to frost.

What are the Different Types of Dahlias Available From Breck's Canada?

Breck's Canada offers many different dahlias and dahlia bulbs for sale. You will find many dahlia varieties with gorgeous flowers. Some of our favorite dahlias include American Dawn for its plum purple center and pink petals.
The Dahlia Mixture Super Sak has many different types and colors in one bag.

Are Dahlias Perennials?

Depending on your Canadian hardiness zone, dahlias can be a perennial or an annual. If you have harsh winters, dahlias will be annuals. However, you can lift your dahlias and store them in 4-10 c and they can be replanted the next year. If you live in a warmer climate where winters are mild, your dahlias will sprout the next spring.

Gardeners Guide to Dahlia Bulbs

What to do After Receiving Your Dahlia Tubers

Your dahlias are shipped from Holland to your home. Dahlia tubers are field grown and have been harvested recently. If you don't have time to plant them immediately, keep the dahlia tubers in their original bags at about (4-7°C). Quick planting, however, will yield the best results.

How to Plant Dahlias

Dahlias are frost tender. Your dahlia tubers can go directly into the ground in the spring after the ground has warmed and the chance of frost has passed. One good guideline is to plant dahlias at the same time you would plant your vegetable garden. If you want early blooms, start the tubers indoors in good light about a month before you plant them outside.

How To Care For Dahlias

Our high quality dahlia tubers are harvested in Holland and kept cool until they are shipped to Canadian customers. Dahlias prefer drained soil but need to be watered regularly. Plant dahlias in moist to dry soil. Do not water until they sprout. Once they sprout water gently once per week. Plant dahlias in full sun about 12 to 18 inches apart and 6 to 8 inches deep. Pinch the top of your dahlia plants above the 4th set of leaves for more blooms.

How To Store Dahlias Over Winter

You can store your Dahlias over winter by using a ventilated box or basket. Take each clump of tubers and fill the box with slightly moistened sand, peat moss or vermiculite and place them in a cool, dry location. If you like you can split your dahlias in the fall or the spring. Look for each cut to have an "eye". The temperatures should remain between 4 to 10 c. when you store dahlias over winter. Make sure to check your tubers periodically throughout winter to ensure your Dahlias are not rotting or drying out.
