Product FAQs
Do you offer substitutions?
If an item you order is unavailable or doesn’t meet our quality standards, we may substitute a like item of equal or greater value. The substitute item will be identified on the packing slip that comes with the order or will have a substitution note attached.
What should I do when my bulbs arrive?
When your Breck’s plants arrive, unpack them promptly and plant as soon as possible for the best results. If planting must be delayed, store bulbs and bareroot plants in a cool, well-ventilated, frost-free location. Follow the included planting instructions, provide proper soil conditions and care, and be patient as plants establish—some varieties may take several weeks to show new growth. For more information, read detailed arrival and storage instructions.
How deep should I plant bulbs?
Plant bulbs at a depth of two to three times the bulb’s height, measured from the soil surface to the top of the bulb. Most large bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, should be planted about 15 cm deep, while smaller bulbs are typically planted 8–10 cm deep. Proper planting depth helps bulbs establish strong roots and thrive.
Which end of the bulb goes up?
Most bulbs, like tulips and daffodils, should be planted with the pointed end facing upward. For corms, tubers, and rhizomes, place any visible sprouts or growing points on top. Smaller bulbs that do not have a clear top or bottom can be planted in any direction, as their shoots will naturally grow toward the surface.
How far apart should bulbs be planted?
Space bulbs according to their size and recommended growing requirements. Measure spacing from the center of one plant to the center of the next. Large bulbs, such as daffodils, are generally planted 8–15 cm apart, while smaller bulbs, like anemones and snowdrops, can be spaced 3–5 cm apart. Tubers, such as dahlias, should be planted about 30 cm apart or more, depending on the variety.
When should I water bulbs?
Water bulbs thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil and encourage root growth, but avoid overwatering, which can cause bulb rot. During dry periods, provide deep watering as needed, especially when flower buds appear. Aim for about 2.5 cm of water per week during the bud, bloom, and early foliage stages if rainfall is insufficient.
