Although Ostara doesn't grow as tall as some other alliums, it's no less colourful and conspicuous—and pollinators love it every bit as much. Each sturdy, 40 cm stem supports a reddish-purple, 10–15 cm cluster of tiny, bell-shaped florets. The nectar-laden flower clusters attract butterflies and beneficial bees to the garden, but are unappetizing to deer and rabbits. This versatile variety looks great in a border and attracts lots of attention in mass plantings. Alliums are often grown for cut flowers, either fresh or dried.
