Drumstick Yellow Coneflower

Petals? Who needs ’em!
With a compact, upright habit and remarkably strong stems, this drought-tolerant coneflower makes a striking addition to sunny beds and borders. Its unusual orange-yellow cones are petal free, giving the blooms a sculptural, modern look that holds up well in the garden or a vase. Plants grow to up to 70 cm and produce multiple stems topped with long-lasting blooms that are a hit with pollinators. Hairy foliage adds texture, and the extended bloom time keeps the display going through the season.

About the Hybridizer

In the picturesque Dutch village of Warmond, Marco van Noort continues a family tradition of plant breeding that started in 1929. His grandfather founded the nursery, initially focusing on tulips and daffodils, while his father expanded into breeding small-flowered gladioli. Today, Marco, the third generation of his family to lead the nursery, focuses on breeding coneflowers, hardy geraniums, hardy coreopsis and astrantias. His work centres on enhancing disease resistance, vibrant colours, longer blooming seasons and stronger stems.

Marco’s passion for plants began at an early age, when his curiosity about the natural world sparked a lifelong interest in breeding. He has since developed over 60 new plant varieties and continues to innovate, always striving for better plants that thrive in gardens. In his breeding process, Marco prioritizes environmentally-sound practices, focusing on soil health, pest control through natural predators and crop rotation to ensure stronger, disease-resistant plants. Breck's is excited to offer Marco's latest coneflower varieties exclusively. They include Cheerleader Orange, Cheerleader Yellow, Wild Supreme, Stuffed Candy, Drumstick Yellow and Drumstick Bicolor. These stunners showcase Marco’s expertise and passion, offering vibrant, long-lasting blooms for gardens across the U.S. When he's not hybridizing plants, Marco enjoys keeping honeybees and competing in marathon canoe and surf ski races.
