Violet-blue bellflowers, or campanula plants, are a classic element of the cottage garden. These star-shaped flowers typically grow in clumping perennial form, and are drought tolerant.

Create the enchanting cottage garden that you've always wanted by selecting from the many types of bellflowers available. From upright and tall bloomers to those that grow close to the ground, these brilliantly hued flowers are extremely versatile. The tiny blooms come in a range of shapes including star, tubular and bell, and you can find them in blue, white, red and pink hues. With their gorgeous showy flowers, campanula bellflowers look right at home as the focal point in any garden.

Our charming Dutch bellflowers love to have full sun, but they also do well with partial shade. They grow exceptionally well in climate hardiness zones 4 to 8, but some varieties are capable of growing in zone 3 with the proper protection. Ensure your bellflowers have well-drained soil, high in organic matter if possible. Ranging in height, some varieties can reach 15 to 30 inches tall, while others only grow to 6 to 12 inches. Some varieties love to spread, so it's important to plant them with plenty of space in between one another so they can roam. Approximately 12 inches apart works well. Bellflowers bloom in the summer, but their brilliant blooms can last well into the fall. Plant these beauties in the spring, when there are no longer any threats of frost.

Bellflowers make an excellent addition to lively gardens full of colour and charm. Pair these stunners with tall bearded irises, daylilies, or geraniums to create a stunning presentation that will help you embrace the warm weather. Plant your Dutch flowers in rock gardens or use them as attention-getting back borders. They also make a lovely addition to portable containers, allowing you to use your creativity to create a welcoming addition to entryways. Choose low spreading varieties for adding a delightful trail of flowers over the tops of stone walls. Add charm to your gardens with beautiful and colourful bellflowers.
